Medication

Medications are often used in conjunction with behavioral techniques like bladder retraining, dietary changes and exercise/rehabilitation to treat urinary incontinence. Types of medications utilize may include:

  • Anticholinergics – Prescription medications used to calm an overactive bladder and may also be helpful for urge incontinence. Several different drugs fall in to this category including oxybutynin (Ditropan), tolterodine (Detrol), darifenacin (Enablex), fesoterodine (Toviaz), solifenacin (Vesicare) and trospium (Sanctura).
  • Topical estrogen – Applying a low-dose estrogen in the form of a vaginal cream, ring or patch may help to tone and rejuvenate tissue in the urethra and vaginal areas. This may help to reduce some of the symptoms of urinary incontinence.
  • Imipramine – A tricyclic antidepressant, imipramine (Tofranil) may be used to treat mixed, urge and stress, incontinence.
  • Duloxetine – The antidepressant medication duloxetine (Cymbalta) is sometimes used to treat stress incontinence.
