Jazz Up Your Water to Stay Hydrated in the Summer Heat

As the heat index rises it is vital we understand the importance that hydration plays in our lives. Hydration is vital to our body, considering the human body is made up of 60% water. That’s over half of the human body! Sweating is our body’s natural response to heat. As we sweat we lose water and it is important we maintain proper fluid balance in order to prevent dehydration.

As many of us flock to sports drinks that, in theory, will help to replace our electrolytes, it is important to remember that although we are sweating there are more healthier and natural ways to replace water in our body without added calories. Caffeine laden drinks can also tend to be problematic as caffeine will dehydrate the body.

Water, the first beverage of choice that should come to mind, would be a great addition to your day. Tired of plain water, try jazzing it up with lemon, lime or orange slices. Add a few cucumber slices and mint for a refreshing beverage. Cool herbal teas can also be a refreshing change to your daily beverage menu as well. All natural, full of flavor and zero calories.

During these hot summer months it is important to remember to stay hydrated. Drinking one glass of water is not enough. Most people require a minimum of 64 oz of fluid per day. That’s 8 cups of water! Next time you reach for your afternoon “cup of Joe” ask yourself “did I have my water today?”

Ways to jazz up water:

  • Add some citrus such as lemon, limes or oranges
  • Add some fruit such as berries or pineapple
  • Add some herbs such as sage, thyme, mint or basil

*Note for best results let the above items sit in the water for an hour so you get a more robust flavor.
