There are many reasons why a person can have hematuria or blood in their urine. Although many cases of hematuria aren't serious, it's important to see your doctor anytime you notice blood in your urine.

There are two types of hematuria, in simple terms, blood you can see or blood not visible to the naked eye. Blood in the urine is usually a symptom of another medical problem. The most common causes are vaginal contamination, vigorous exercise, kidney stones, viral illness, trauma, or urinary tract infection.  More serious causes of hematuria include bladder or kidney cancer, inflammation of the prostate, STD’s and medical renal disease.
